5 Common Social Media Marketing Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

We all make mistakes! And social media marketing is ono exception.

I’ve made so many mistakes over the years when I was learning how to market my businesses online. Oh boy! I hate to think back now to all the things I did wrong! In fact, I’ve made all 5 of these common mistakes, so I want to share some practical tips to help you learn from my mistakes, and avoid them.

1. Not Having a Clear Strategy

Mistake: Many entrepreneurs jump onto social media without a solid plan. They post randomly and hope for the best. This was me! Post and pray is not a strategy my friend.

Solution: Start by setting specific goals. Ask yourself:

- What do I want to achieve with my social media? (more followers, website traffic, engagement?)

- Who is my target audience?

- What message do I want to convey?

Create a simple content calendar that outlines what you’ll post and when. This can help you stay organized and focused.

2. Focusing Too Much on Selling

Mistake: If every post is a sales pitch, you risk pushing your audience away.

Solution: Shift your focus to providing value. Here’s how:

- Share tips or tutorials related to your industry.

- Post behind-the-scenes looks at your business.

- Tell personal stories that connect to your brand.

Aim for an 80/20 rule: 80% value and engagement, 20% sales. This way, you build relationships while still promoting your offerings.

3. Ignoring Engagement

Mistake: It’s easy to post and forget, but ignoring comments and messages can make followers feel unappreciated.

Solution: Make it a habit to check your posts regularly. Here are some practical tips:

- Set aside time each day to respond to comments and messages.
