Why are you on social media?

I’ve had to ask myself this question many times over the years. Have you given any thought to it?

When I started my photography business, I was eager to jump onto Instagram to share my work. This was back when Instagram was still a photo-sharing app. I really didn’t give much thought to marketing. I just assumed that if people saw my work, they’d want to book with me. I didn’t even have to go out of my way to create content since I was posting images of work that I was already creating for my clients. I wasn’t getting new clients from social media, but I didn’t worry about it and kept on posting, because I had the images.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I jumped headfirst into the essential oil craze and started a network marketing business. Of course, I opened an Instagram account because that’s what you do…right? Most distributors had accounts and were posting photos of their oils, and the pretty company graphics that were provided for us. And of course, the sales flyers that came out. I naively thought that since I was a photographer, the pretty photos I created of my products would attract customers. So I got on the treadmill of content creation and consistent posting. I didn’t attract any customers and eventually ended up burning myself out.

If there’s one thing to know about me it’s that I’m a wee bit stubborn. It irked me that I couldn’t make a success of my social media accounts. I just couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong! So I started hunting and pecking for tips, tricks, content planners, freebies and mini-courses. I eventually bit the bullet and purchased a $3000 social media training course for network marketers. It was then that I finally realized….I never had an actual marketing plan. I was just throwing spaghetti against the wall hoping something would stick.

I had no clear plan or strategy for HOW to use social media to:

attract customers
nurture customers
sell to customers

I had no clear understanding of what exactly my purpose was when creating content and the journey I needed to take a new follower on.

And I burned out creating content that got me nowhere.

Does any of this sound familiar? If so, keep reading.
