Think You Don’t Need a Marketing Plan? Why You Can’t Ignore This

If you’re running a business, a solid marketing plan is essential to your success. Without one, you’ll likely feel confused, overwhelmed, and burnt out. Whether you’re new to marketing or just looking to sharpen your skills, having a clear strategy is the first step toward making social media work for you.

Start With a Purpose—Or You’ll Burn Out

Before you post anything on social media, you need to understand why you’re there. So many of us jump into social media without a clear goal, only to get frustrated when we don’t see results. I know, because this is EXACTLY how I started my social media journey. So before you just start posting and praying, I want you to ask yourself: What’s the purpose of your social media presence? Do you want to build brand awareness, generate leads, or make more sales? Or are you just there because everyone else is doing it and you think it’s what you “should” be doing?

My friend, without a clear goal, you are going to waste your precious time and energy. Knowing your purpose will guide everything you do and help you avoid that feeling of spinning your wheels without moving forward.

Awareness, Leads, Sales: The Simple Path to Growth

Marketing doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s really just about moving people from awareness (where they get to know your brand), to leads (where they show interest in what you offer), and finally to sales (where they buy from you).

Social media is a fantastic tool to create awareness, but it’s just the start. To keep your audience engaged and guide them toward a purchase, you need to have a system—a funnel—that makes it easy for people to go from being followers to becoming customers.

Here’s the basic flow:

  1. Social Media: Builds awareness and captures attention.

  2. Lead Magnet: Offers something valuable in exchange for their email.

  3. Email Marketing: Builds a relationship, nurtures trust, and makes sales.

Why You Need an Email List

While social media is great for getting visibility, it’s not something you own. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn can change their rules at any time. This is why building an email list is crucial. Your email list is something you own, and it allows you to communicate directly with your audience whenever you need to.

A common way to build your email list is by offering a lead magnet. This is something valuable you give away for free, such as a checklist, quiz, guide, or video, in exchange for someone’s email. Once they’re on your list, you can send regular emails to nurture that relationship, provide value, and eventually sell your products or services.

Know, Like, Trust: The Key to Sales

People don’t buy from businesses they don’t trust. They need to know you, like what you offer, and trust that you can deliver. Social media is where you start building that relationship. Your content helps people get to know who you are and what you stand for. Over time, by consistently showing up and providing value, they begin to like and trust you.

Once you have their trust, selling becomes much easier. Your email list is where you’ll really build this relationship—through helpful content and personalized offers.

Don’t Rely on Social Media Alone—Diversify

While social media is important, it’s not the only tool you should rely on. You don’t control what happens on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Your posts could get buried by algorithms, or you could lose access to your audience if the platform changes. That’s why it’s important to build your presence on multiple platforms and, more importantly, grow your email list.

Your email list is your direct connection to your customers and potential buyers. You control it, and no algorithm can get in the way of reaching your audience.
